Washington Post Mensa Invitational?

Every once in a while I get some good jokes, videos, games, etc. from my friends. There is one that I seem to get every year and I started wondering if this thing really exists. It is usually called the Washington Post Mensa Invitational. This time my good friend Christina Pulawski sent it to me. She usually sends me only great stuff that makes me laugh out loud.

Well, it doesn´t exist really. I mean something like it exists and it is called The Style Invitational and it is part of the Washington Post. This is a weekly game in which the grand prize is a trophy called The Inker and maybe some other small prize that may have something to do with that week´s contest and that are also given to the 1st runners up. The other runners up get a Style Invitational Loser T-shirt. Honorable mentions could get a magnate.

It is not always based on writing. In fact, week #713 is titled Painings. If you go to week #713 you are going to see a picture making reference to a winner from a year ago who took a picture of his feet, or tried to anyway.

Meanwhile you can also take a look at the following list, which I think is actually from 2005 as opposed to 2006 like it says in this recycled e-mail. I did find them funny though. Don´t worry, you might see them every year in your mailbox. At least now you can tell whomever it is that is sending these things to you that you know the Mensa Invitational doesn´t exist really, sort of.

readers to take any word from the dictionary, alter it by
adding,subtracting, or changing one letter, and supply a new definition.

The 2006 winners are:
1. Cashtration (n.): The act of buying (or building) a house, which
renders the subject financially impotent for an indefinite period
of time.

2. Ignoranus: A person who's both stupid and an asshole.

3. Intaxication: Euphoria at getting a tax refund, which lasts until
you realize that it was your money to start with.

4. Reintarnation: Coming back to life as a hillbilly.

5. Bozone (n.): The substance surrounding stupid people that stops
bright ideas from penetrating. The bozone layer, unfortunately, shows
little sign of breaking down in the near future.

6. Foreploy: Any misrepresentation about yourself for the purpose of
getting laid.

7. Giraffiti: Vandalism spray-painted very, very high.

8. Sarchasm: The gulf between the author of sarcastic wit and the
person who doesn't get it.

9. Inoculatte: To take coffee intravenously when you are running
late.

10. Hipatitis: Terminal coolness.

11. Osteopornosis: A degenerate disease. (This one got extra
credit.)

12. Karmageddon: It's when everybody is sending off all these really
bad vibes, and then the Earth explodes and it's a serious bummer.

13. Decafalon: (n.): The grueling event of getting through the
day consuming only things that are good for you.

14. Glibido: All talk and no action.

15. Dopeler Effect: The tendency of stupid ideas to seem smarter when
they come at you rapidly.

16. Arachnoleptic Fit ( n.): The frantic dance performed just after
you've accidentally walked through a spider web.

17. Beelzebug (n.): Satan in the form of a mosquito, that gets into
your bedroom at three in the morning and cannot be cast out.

18. Caterpallor (n.): The color you turn after finding half a worm in
the fruit you're eating.

The Power Of Flight

I have something fun for you today. Well, I think they're fun every day, but this one was fun for me to get. I'm bringing you a flock of robins that were taking an opportunity to get themselves a wintertime meal in some small trees. The fun part is that some of them are in various stages of flight!

First, I think this is similar to a post I wrote a few days ago called, The Birds. They both include several shadowy photos of birds flocking in barren trees. The difference is that this time these birds were only a few feet away from me. One almost flew into me!

There is a main trail that leads into the forest where these robins like to gather. It seems that there is plenty of food for them in and around the trees here. I've seen other birds here as well, but mostly robins. Robins on the ground, robins in the air, and robins in the trees.

When I was on my way back to the front of the park, I encountered this noisy flock of robins gathered in the trees here. They were flying around back and forth. Some were staying on the same branches for several minutes before moving on, and some would only stay for seconds at a time.

When I saw that the flock wasn't going to leave just yet, I decided to take my time and get the best examples of them in their back and forth flight as I could. The only regrets were that I wish the lighting was better, and I wish I would have remembered to get some video.

Sometimes pictures are the best way to show some things though. Showing a bird frozen in flight can only be done with a photograph. No video can capture that long enough for you to sit there and study the pattern of the wings and the shape of the bird like a photo can.

This whole thing was really tricky for me while I was out there, because I was trying to move in as close as I could while trying to keep them from flying away or dropping little birdy bombs on me. It was still a fun experience, even with that last risk.

When I decided to finally leave them there, I had to walk directly under the whole flock. I pulled the hood of my coat up over my head, and then hunched over to look at the ground as I quickly made my way through that awful gauntlet. I'm happy to report that none of them even tried to get me with their little homing missiles.

A Fish Called Fred

Metro Toronto Zoo, and unfortunately, this isnt Fred. But I remember Fred, a fish that measured several feet in length, he lived in the Eurasia Pavilion with the butterflies and exotic birds. He inhabited a large pool with a glass wall and developed a remarkable fascination with humans. If you dared to be a total fool in public, you could engage him in play, or combat (I cant read piscine minds) by shaking your hair in front of the tank; he would respond by shaking, bumping the glass and displaying his beautiful fan of fins. Alas, Fred died, and we all miss him. This is another fish, although he seems to be developing a similar fascination to humans given how photogenic he was. He didnt, however, respond to a head shake.

I love fish, and maybe this photo shows you why. Also, thinking hed make a nice linocut.

& More Zoo news, last time I visited, I heard frogs/toads singing indoors. What a strange and magical sound to hear in mid-winter. I couldnt for the life of me find the little songsters, though.

Happy New Year, everybody! I have to tell you, I don't really have much to say today, but I just felt like writing. Does that mean I'm feeling better? I don't know, but writing has to help. In my last post, I showed you a picture of my ghostly white arm. Take a very close look at the picture above. Look at those arms. That's me! And you thought it was just a costume.

Well, I do have one confession. I lied just a little bit. Yes, part of it really is a costume. Look closely at my face in the picture. I'm embarrassed to say it, but I disguised myself a bit. Alright, I'll just come out and say it. It's the eye patch, okay! I'm just wearing it because I think it makes me look cool. C'mon, everyone does some small thing like that, don't they?

My 14 rattie girls having floor time while their cage gets cleaned. No rude comments please, they are housed in a ferret nation cage which I believe can comfortably house 20 rats.
My older girls are fine, they have been to the vets about their tumours and have not grown larger, they show no signs of being in pain so will be with me until either they pass themselves or if they do suffer, then a final visit to the vet is an order.
All are eating and fighting over treats happy and healthy. Odessa came to me with her tail like that, it does not hurt her or effect her in anyway shape or form, just makes her look unique !
Bella is not in this vid as she was adopted and now has a big sister to keep her cuddled and comfy, yay !
No one fell down the stairs and most just enjoyed playing in the old travel cage for my chinnies, silly girls ! Each and everyone is spoiled rotten :) And yes, when they are out I always count them to make sure everyone is accounted for.

I don't know if Argentina is too efficient, but the customer-server communication works in a different way . One in which the former has a little more responsibility in informing his or her tastes, preferences, and recommendations...if you want a particular beer, it's up to you to ask: "¿have you got beer X, beer on tap, whatever?" if you order a piece of meat without clarifying anything, it comes "a punto" (is that "medium"? I always get lost with those scales)...if you want it some other way, you ask in advance.

I remember feeling like a moron in a bagel store in Manhattan, because I wanted A bagel. Un bagel. I wanted to try my first NY bagel, plain, a secas, sin nada, no toppings. How would I know how it really tastes if I attack it with cream cheese, bacon, eggs, peanut butter, chocolate? It took me three times to make the guy understand I just wanted A PLAIN BAGEL WITH NOTHING ELSE, NOT EVEN TOASTED. And it wasn't a language thing: the staff were all Spanish-speaking. They just wouldn't compute the request: "One bagel, please"...

If I want it with something on top, or toasted, or filled, it's in my interest to ask that. If they sell bagels, or beer for that matter, they should give me one. No questions asked.

In Truco language, I just gave my "Quiero Retruco", to your "Truco".

(Truco's a card game, that's all about teasing, lying and bluffing, like Poker but much, much funnier)

Goodbye Democrats Abroad!

Hopefully yesterday was the very last meeting that I participate in with this organization.

For those that know me, it's common knowledge that I did not have such a great time these last two years with regards to Democrats Abroad.

However, I can't help but be grateful for those that, two years ago, took the time to vote me into office.

I wish I could have done more for you.

The people who attended the meeting got a peek into some of the craziness that I have put up with for the past two years.

The ones that showed up to the bar afterwords got more of the details.

I am glad I got to get some of that off my chest at Sugar Bar. I was really happy to see quite a few people show up to have a beer with us.

I also feel pretty bad for those that showed up. Not enough of us made it to the meeting and we needed 25 people to reach a quorum. Sadly, we got up to about 19 people.

I also feel pretty bad for the three brave souls who ran for office.

I wish I could have done more for you too.

As for what's going to happen next with Democrats Abroad Argentina, I don't have a clue. Yanqui Mike has promised to look into the matter and let us all know.

Meanwhile, I am going to take some distance for a while and try to reflect on my DAA experience.

KISS Alive 35

Now on to my second of three posts of the day. This one doesn't contain any pictures, because my camera wasn't with me. I went to see a KISS concert Friday night. Some of you aren't interested in this part, but some of you asked about it, so I'm going to tell a little bit about it. I think just about everybody has heard of KISS by now, they're the rock band with the painted faces. They've been around since the early 1970s. They have never left, and now they have a new album and a tour.

This was actually a very historical event Friday. Our Cobo Arena is going to be torn down in the near future, and when the guys in KISS heard about it, they made sure they got here in time to be the last group to have a concert there. You see, Cobo is very important to them. Even though they are not from Detroit, it was our where they first became a hit. And they actually recorded their first album "KISS Alive" right there in Cobo. There is a picture of the crowd from there on theback of that album.

Okay, so how was the concert? It was fantastic! A Kiss concert is more than just a rock concert. It's music and rock theater at the same time! This is a very complete show, and you come away from one of their concerts feeling completely satisfied every time. They put everything they have into one of their shows.

But what happened at the show? What made it great? Well, the tour is called KISS Alive 35. It's been 35 years since they made their KISS Alive album, and they have devoted a whole tour to it. That means that this Cobo concert has been even more important. They are celebrating this huge hit album by playing a show consisting of exactly the same songs as the ones on that album.

In the middle of all of this, Gene Simmons proceeds to breath a big fireball into the air. After the set of songs from that old album, they come back for the longest encore you've ever seen. Then to start off another of his songs,Gene flies into the air and up to the top of the arena to sing one of his most famous songs.

He's not the only one with a few tricks. Paul Stanley rides a cable to the back of the arena to sing one of his songs from the middle of the crowd. The guitar player, Tommy Thayer, shoots fireworks from his guitar during his solo. The drums move in all different directions, while drummer Eric Singer is still drumming away, and even singing a few songs himself.

Then to end the show, they play a song that's near and dear to the hearts of this Detroit crowd. Actually this song was inspired by the city of Detroit itself. They end the show with the song "Detroit Rock City". Everyone goes home happy. It was the very first show of their American tour, and we all got to say goodbye to Cobo with KISS!

Sugar & Spice Has a New Web Site!

Sugar & Spice has a new web site!
I think it looks way better than the old one. It is still a basic site, very few bells and whistles.

So far it's only in Spanish. I have to get working on the English part, but that might be in January since we are way, way busy right now.

Some of the segments that are getting more visitors than others is the corporate gift section or regalos.

Under the section called "venta al publico" there is a map showing our location. What do you think of this map? Is it clear enough?

So please take a look and if you spot any errors please feel free to let me know about them. The designers are going to be making some changes but we decided to let them post it before they finished with the modifications that we suggested. Currently the site itself links back to my old blog URL which had a funny little mistake in the spelling; in Spanish it spelled out Species instead of Spices.

Basically there will be several minor changes to the site on any given day.

Entrecard Top Droppers Widget

I'm going to give you a very different kind of post today. I am frequently asked questions about some of the things here on my blog such as the sidebar widgets or the design of the site. It has never occurred to me to write about some of these things until yesterday when I was asked about my Entrecard Top Droppers Widget.

For all of you that are looking for some Nature, I posted some pictures right below all of this geek stuff.

I actually put this widget together myself, and it was very easy to do. It can serve many other functions besides being for top droppers. What about a latest posts widget? Or anything else you want involving an RSS feed. So today, for anyone interested, I'm going to explain how to create this Top Droppers widget so anyone can do it. This one works strictly for Blogger blogs. Others that use javascript might also find it useful.

The first step is to find the RSS feed for your top Entrecard droppers. Go to your Entrecard dashboard, and look for the Statistics button along the top of the page. Click that button to go to your statistics page. About halfway down the page is the Tables section. The first list in that section is your Top Card Droppers. You'll see the orange RSS icon there. Right click on that icon and copy that address. It's your Top droppers RSS feed.

Next go to this site: Feed2JS. This is the place that makes it all happen. There are other similar sites, but I use this one right now. Now paste your Top Droppers RSS feed into the box towards the top of the page. Don't worry, they tell you where to do it right on the page. There are several options you can choose now to customize the look of your widget now. Go ahead and try what you want.

When you think you have what you want or you just want to know what it will look like, click on the Preview Feed button at the right of the page. It will pop up a window that shows what your widget will look like. You can close this pop up window at any time. If you don't like the way it looks yet, keep adjusting the settings.

When it finally looks the way you want it, it's time to generate the script for your widget. So, click on the Generate JavaScript button that's right below the Preview Feed button. That will create a new box that is titled Get Your Code Here above where you entered the RSS feed. Copy all of the text that's inside that box. That text will become your Top Droppers Widget.

Now we will move on to the next step. Head on over to your blog, you know, your Blogger blog page. At the Blogger bar at the top click on the word Customize. Most of us know where this goes, but I'm still going to take you through this a little bit. You are now on your Layout page. Click on Add a Gadget at your sidebar section to go to the list of sidebar widgets. Choose the HTML/JavaScript selection in the list. Now paste the text you copied right into the Content section. Pick a title for your widget. Click Save, and you're done.

All you have to do now is decide where you want to place the widget on you sidebar. That choice is up to you. If the widget doesn't look the way you want it, you can always go back and do it all again. You can potentially create all sorts of lists on your Blog with this little RSS list builder. It's all up to you. If you have any questions about my instructions, all you have to do is ask.

Q. Must I employ an accountant?
A. It'll still be up to you whether to use an accountant or not.
The majority of self-employed people already use accountants and they may want to carry on doing that. Self Assessment brought in new rules that made it easier for you to understand your tax. So if you didn't use an accountant under the old system, you're unlikely to need one for Self Assessment.
People find it useful to have accountants for reasons other than dealing with their tax affairs, for example, proper accounting helps them manage their business better.
Q. How has Self Assessment affected partnerships?
A. The introduction of Self Assessment brought two main changes:
A partnership is no longer assessed on its profits in the partnership name. Instead the partners are assessed separately and pay tax on their share of the profits. It is as if all partners were in business on their own.
Partners are solely responsible for the tax on their own share of the profits. They no longer have to pay the tax owed by another partner.
The partnership still needs to send us a partnership return showing the total profit or loss made by the partnership business, any related information, and the split between partners. One partner can be nominated to be responsible for the partnership tax return BUT any penalties for sending the return in late will be imposed on each partner.
One thing that hasn't changed is joint liability - it remains the same for partnership business debts - for example the PAYE tax on employees, where all the partners will be held to be accountable.
Who does Self Assessment apply to?
A. Self Assessment applies to:
self employed people including business partners
company directors
other people with more complicated tax affairs
pensioners with more complex tax affairs
people who received rent or other income from land and property in the UK
trustees and personal representatives

A Surprise From Above

I've been taking a lot of pictures of birds right outside my house the last couple of weeks. The opportunity presented itself, so I have naturally been taking it. The only problem is that the only birds out there are either sparrows or starlings. They're both fun to look at, but I only need so many pictures at a time.

That's why when I went out and saw the sun shining off of this bird I almost left it alone. I figured the sun must be illuminating another sparrow for me. Even though I almost turned away, I realized that this shining bright sight was almost begging me to take a picture. How could I say no to that?

That's why when I got back home from the hike I had been headed for, I was very surprised when I looked at the pictures of my shining bird. It wasn't a sparrow at all. It turned out to be a mourning dove! This is now the second time I've been able to get a picture of one of these birds. And while I know they are also very common, this is the first one I've seen outside my house.

I guess this is another example of why you should always expect the unexpected. Once, I assumed the only birds where I lived were sparrows. Then I thought I would only ever see robins with my camera. Now I'm learning that there are so many different birds out there to see. I just had to open my eyes to them.

Are your eyes truly opened to all that nature has to offer? I don't think we can ever be finished discovering all there is to see. I know I've said this before, but even living in the middle of a city isn't a death sentence to nature. You don't even have to leave your house to see nature. I know of one person who sees more nature out her window than most people do living in the country. Check my links to find her.

Just stepping out my front door I found this mourning dove waiting for me. I almost let the opportunity go, but something told me to grab it while it was there. Now I have several beautiful pictures of this mourning dove. I gladly share them with you. My stories and pictures are another way for you to find nature too. Just reach out and take them.

The Letterbox

It seems I have found a treasure! I told you awhile ago that I bought a hiking GPS so I could enhance my adventures a bit. I soon discovered the world of Geocaching, which is a treasure hunting game using GPS. The further I looked into it, I discovered many different types of these caches. One type is what is called a Letterbox.

A letterbox is just a sealed container with a rubber stamp and paper to record your visit. There's usually no real treasure. You're usually given clues to find oneof these boxes. If you can figure it out, you'll find the letterbox. The fun is in the hunt.

Well, while I was doing a small bit of research on a normal geocache I was hunting, I came across the information for this letterbox. It happened to be in a place I sometimes go, and I recognized the place that they described. So I knew I had to search for this one.

When I arrived at the general location, I looked around for a few seconds. It took me only that long to instinctively know right where to find this letterbox. I walked right over to where I knew it had to be, and there it was as plain as day! The only problem was that any body would have been able to find it.

Part of the rules are that ordinary people, who they embarrassingly call muggles, aren't supposed to know about this stuff. I'm telling you about these things because I am a great rebel, the rule breaker of the ages, and an all around rascal! And nobody can stop me! So there!

Anyway, since this box was pretty much laying there in plain sight, I put it back and hid it correctly. Nobody would stumble upon it now! I had to do this while evading three other people who annoyingly entered my trail. After doing my duty I left the park. I've been back and found that it has since been hidden even better now.

So that's it. That is the account of how I found one small treasure. Soon I will become rich with all of these treasures. I will still behave the same as when I had none. That's just because I'm such a good guy. Thank you all. Thank you all.

A Hole In The Ice

Hmm. What is it we have here? I see a scene from a pretty good sized lake, but small by Michigan standards. The lake is frozen over, which would be obvious for this time of year where I live. The ice doesn't seem to be very thick though. What are those two objects towards the center of the picture?

Those two objects are a couple of bales of hay. I thought about dragging it along a bit, but I don't feel like doing that to you today. So I'll just tell you what else is there too. In between the bales is a big hole in the ice. It appears that somebody was out there ice fishing.

This theory of mine may be wrong though, because I was always under the impression that the hole for ice fishing was much smaller than that, maybe only as big as a foot in diameter. I've never been ice fishing, so I could be very wrong about this. But that hole looks much too big, and much too dangerous to me.

I want to say first that ice fishing really sounds fascinating to me. The only problem is that there is no way I'm going to walk out on that ice. I'm sure some of you remember me saying this stuff last year, but I don't trust the ice over that much water.

I personally have no way of knowing if the ice is thick and strong enough to hold me up. I'm sure some people have a pretty good idea of what to expect, but someone like me doesn't belong on that ice. What do you think? Would you go ice fishing? Have you ever been ice fishing? And lastly, does the ice in this picture look safe enough to walk out onto?

Yesterday I wrote this post that was basically an emotional response. I should know better, but having received potshots from these people for better part of a year and facing what we thought was going to be desertification without a fair hearing from Democrats Abroad just got the better of me.

I saved that post to remind me of what I should probably not fall for in the future. Yeah, there are some people that constantly look to tear me down. It has happened once before.

So if you would like the cliffnotes version of what all of this is about.....

I ran for office as Treasurer of Democrats Abroad Argentina and won. I had several proposals of mine meet up with resistance from a minority of our executive group, things like participating in an annual 4th of July event that ICANA hosted and having us meet at ICANA for example. I also proposed that we piggyback on events with Internations who love to hold happy hour events around the city. This minority has gone on to press International to de-certify us because according to them these things I proposed are an abomination and they are illegal. My point was that they are not and I was never given a chance to prove it.

Small group politics are boring and this one is no exception. Except that now International has gotten into the middle of this and all I want to know is what are they going to do about it.

So, those of you who already saw the original post will understand why I took it down. The others who chance upon this for the first time can just rest assured that it was not a radical post, but it did target and ridicule slightly the one person who I think is responsible for all of this. But, since I really don´t want to get petty and bring myself down to their level I decided to replace it for now with this.

I do apologize to you my readers for the mix-up. I also apologize to that person I ridiculed publicly. I should have just kept it private. Just keep in mind, that being mixed up is part of life and makes us human. Also apologizing is tough.

Now back to what I should be doing and that is talking to grown up business people about business.

Yep, another man, actually Greg, the guy from the last time. This time, I cheated...I did a light pencil sketch first, then inked in with my magic brush aka Pentel Pocket Brush. Black is so strong, I just didn't have the courage to start with it. One false move and you're toast. So now I know what graphite is for (I hate the look and feel of graphite, but it erases real good!). After removing the graphite with a kneaded erasure I had great fun with the colours.
And that's all for today.

& PS. This one passes the library test for me given the style & lighting so no censorship today; hope I'm not wrong on that.

with the most common unit of measurement- a head length. Head lengths are the most common measurement in figure drawing From antiquity through the Renaissance, artists painted and sculpted figures that were 8 or 9 head lengths tall. For instance, Michelangelo's David, when measured, is 8 head lengths tall. The proportions of the David are idealized and heroic and different than the proportions of the average person, such as myself. I measured 7 1/4 head lengths tall. Now, I could never get a consistant answer on how many headlengths tall the average human body is....so I decided to construct an experiment. have read in some places that the body is as short as 7 head lengths and as tall as 8. I measured 100 people. 50 males and 50 females....right now you are seeing only a small sample... I made sure to include various body types to make this study scientific. I was able to learn that a humans proportions in head lengths is directly related with a persons height. The shortest person measured only 5 and 1/3 head lengths...the tallest was 8 and a half head lengths. ...But the vast majority were very close to 7.5 head lengths....and When I averaged the 100 people together, the result was 7.47 head lengths. Merrill! What the Hell is that .....and how does this relate to figure drawing? ......Oh dont worry, this chart shows you a normal distribution of heights. All that you need to know is that you can use 7.5 head lengths as a fairly accurate measurement, 95 percent of the time. So there its settled. The average human is 7.5 head lengths tall. Spaces on our bodies equivalent to one head length are...on our arm, 1.) from the top of the armpit to the joint of the elbow 2.) From the bottom of our chin to our nipples 3.) From our nipples to our navel 4. ) The height of our rear end. While females have differences in their anatomy, these measurements will work on them as well.Where do two head lengths fit on the human body?
1.) Its two head lengths down the upper leg
2.) It is also two head lengths down the lower leg
3.) It is two head lengths between the clavicle and the anterior iliadic crest...also known as the bony area that protrudes slightly lower than and on either side of your navel.
4.) It is also two head lengths from the elbow to the tip of the middle finger
5.) It is also two head lengths down the back, not including the neck
Across
1.) Two heads across the shoulders

What about three head lengths?
1.) 3 head lengths from the top of the head to the belly button
2.) 3 head lengths from the top of the armpit to the tip of the middle finger
and Four head lengths?
1.) The length of the leg is four head lengths
I have an important suggestion for when we draw the entire body. We know that the average body is 7 1/2 head lengths. Split up these head lengths in to three from the top and four from the bottom, with the extra half head length in the middle of the body. Splitting up the body in this way allows us to identify the landmarks more easily. We know that the height of the leg is four heads and the nipples and navel are landmarks that can be used from the top down.
Another suggestion that I have is to remember the belly button rule. This comes from Leonardo DaVinci who states that if a persons legs are chopped off below the knee, the belly button becomes the center of the body.
Also, it is the same distance from the top of the head to the tip of the middle finger, as it is from the ground to the belly button.
Davinci also said that the width of a persons shoulders is 1/4 of their height. I have found this measurement to be less accurate than head lengths but it is still applicable most of the time. Knowing this information also gives us the ability to break the body in to four parts.
1.) Head to nipples
2.) nipples to groin
3.) Groin to kneecap
4.) Kneecap to ground
Now lets talk about size relationships between similar body parts. On average, the arm is about 25 percent smaller than the leg. The hand is the same size as the face. It is also the same size as the foot without the toes. The head is very similar in size to the foot. Finally there is about one hand length between the rib cage and the pelvis. From Facebook I learned that a high school friend of mine is actually living and working in Brazil (Hi Ven!).

Another thing keeping me busy, as anyone following me through twitter knows, is the bumper crop of raspberries this year. Im finding the everywhere. Well, actually, I changed my cycling route and found some lovely untouched roadside bushes, mostly of the black variety which are both more delicious and vicious. They sport hooks for thorns, and regularly draw blood (a worthy sacrifice), as opposed to the wimpy hairy raspy things the red ones brandish (which scratch and tickle). Kind of like tigers vs kittens of the fruit world.

Now above, you see a most delicious mixed handful, and trust me, the berries in this photograph were not long for this world, and disappeared in, well, one gulp. Yum. The inky stains on my fingers are from the black raspberries, and yes, they are black raspberries, as blackberries are a different, but related fruit, flashing neon green coming soon colours all over the woods at this moment.

Speaking of inky fingers, I dont blog much about letterboxing (shhhhits a secret) but then I thought it might be good to add a few good folks to our ranks so I agreed to do an interview about it. Here you can read a beautifully written and well-researched article by Toronto Star reporter, Francine Kopun. I never realized how much hard work and creative sweat goes into a newspaper article until I found myself a part of the process. **The following is a post that I wrote for Democrats Abroad.

I found this video on a blog in Spanish called "Bloc de Periodistas" by Darío Gallo.

Snooping around I found that there are a whole bunch of these types of videos. Call me naive, unplugged from the reality of what is going on in the United States; but, really, has there ever been this type of attention on a presidential hopeful before?

Now the flip side to this positive attention. I have first-hand listened from some friends and family the lies that have been thrown out there by Fox News. This "news" program is so irresponsible. They have to constantly tell people that they are "fair and balanced" because that is exactly what they are not. Just place "un" in front of those two words and it begins to be a more realistic slogan for them. Try it, they are Unfair and Unbalanced. Doesn't that feel better? If you don´t believe me just start googling the subject after watching this video below and you will get a whole bunch of material.

As an added bonus I am including a link to a blog that tracks all the nonsense that Fox News dishes out. Part of their slogan is "We Watch Fox So You Dont Have To" brought to you by News Hounds. I am so glad they are sacrificing like that.

Is Barack Obama being dim or deliberately obtuse? He started out the other day telling a crowd that "English-only" laws were bad, then went on to say immigrants should learn English, then said, "You need to make sure your child can speak Spanish!"

First: Of course it's better if Americans learn to speak some language other than English, generally. The more knowledge, the better, right? Which is why it's heartening to learn that more American students (click on Figure 7) are learning foreign languages than in past years, and that the trend line has been up for years. Most high school grads have taken at least some instruction in a language other than English; more than two-thirds have taken at least two years.

Also, immigrants are learning English, mainly, says research. The whole point on "English only" -- laws that have nothing whatsoever to do with barring Americans from learning other languages or even from running radio stations or magazines or stores or what have you in them -- is that when it comes to governments, our authorities will not guarantee that they'll communicate with you on a permanent basis in some language other than English. They generally don't bar the fire department from seeing to it someone can speak Spanish, for convenience; rather, they stop authorities from granting it something like official status.

That is, "English only" is about stopping governments from solicitously reducing the pressure on immigrants to learn our common language. Such permanent and ongoing official bilingualism, as experts will point out, isn't so much about making sure everyone's multilingual as enabling people to be monolingual in different languages -- "two solitudes," as Hugh MacLennan said of Canada or, as other commentators warn, an inherently inegalitarian society.

But the final bit, where Obama says our kids should learn Spanish, is the clinchers. One asks: Why?

As Foreign Policy's Blake Hounshell points out, the Europeans among whom Obama's so embarrassed "need to learn foreign languages because they live much closer to one another, are more integrated economically, and come from smaller countries. If you're a young Swede, for instance, you need to learn English to be employable." Whereas here, where a 50-mile drive doesn't take you away from the service territory of your native language (as it does in, say, Belgium), "acquiring working-level fluency in a second or third language is expensive and time consuming, and often the potential payoff isn't worth it. My seven years of French has never been very useful, frankly, and I might have been better served learning more about microbiology or fluid dynamics."

There have been rumors (old ones by now) flying around that Cookie Monster was either going to be replaced or dropped from Sesame Street altogether. There even was an online petition sent to PBS against this measure. He was also interviewed on NPR, and you can see the short 5 minute video where he reveals his favorite dirty word among other things as well, on a show titled In Character.

Here in Argentina not too many people know about Cookie Monster; however, this last video below was sent to me by a local Argentine who happens to love cookies. I am sure that if Cookie Monster ever got a hold of her home made cookies he would love them too. Hope you enjoy Cookie Monster's appearance on the Colbert Report as much as I did.

My Blue Nemesis

I am getting closer to defeating a major nemesis of mine. I'm getting closer all the time. The one I speak of is a blue jay! You see, one of my first photography goals was to get a picture of a bird. Any bird. It took me a very long time to get to that point.

Since then I've done that, and with each goal met with my bird photography there have been greater goals that become a next step. I took pictures of birds in flight. I found new types of birds, and took photos of them all. It was amazing to find out the many varieties and colors of birds as I went on. But one well known bird eluded me.

It was the blue jay that did it! Oh, I saw the blue jays, of course. It wasn't that there weren't any around. There were plenty of them, and they always eluded me. If I was able to get a shot of one out in the open, the picture would turn out blurry. If the picture wasn't blurry, the blue jay would be only caught hiding behind a tree branch. Again, no good pictures!

Now you see my latest efforts. I am getting closer every day. The first picture almost had him, this terrible little beauty of a beast. He was lost in shadow that day. If I had been looking away from the sun he would have been mine. But the blue jay knew that, and in his devious little mind he stopped to torment me once again!

In this second picture, just above, I saw a flash of white in the trees across a good sized pond. I zoomed the camera in all the way towards him. I gave it my best, but it just wasn't quite good enough. I just wasn't close enough, and he still hid behind a tree branch. He once again knew I was there!

I think they are laughing at me, those monstrous little blue jays. But I know that I'll have the last laugh. I'll get you, my pretty!

Then I almost had the blue jay again. He would only stop for a few seconds at a time, leaving me no time to quite get my shot off. Still teasing. Still tormenting. But I know I'm getting closer. I know that it is only a matter of time before I will have my prize!

You cannot get away from me! Do you hear! I'm coming for you, little blue jay, with your little pointed head and glorious bluer feathers! I'll never stop til you are mine! I'll capture you on camera, and then you'll be mine forever!!!

Towards thee I roll, thou all-destroying but unconquering blue jay; to the last I grapple with thee; from hell's heart I stab at thee; for hate's sake I spit my last breath at thee.

My big brother lives in Toronto, less than an hour drive from my home, but somehow, we only manage to get together once a year. Whenever that happens, we have a great time, swear we should do this more often, but then it never happens. Christmas used to be the excuse we needed, then it was New Years Eve, and now the latest tradition is a day at the zoo over the Easter Weekend. It fits in with our schedule.
Now, neither of us like telephones much, either, and answering machines even less (though we both own one), and he doesn't have email. To get around this problem, I send invites via mail (yes, you know, a big piece of paper, sealed in an envelope, lick a stamp, drop it in a box, yeah, that kind of mail).

One Big Happy Family

I've been telling you lately that I was going to go on a search for the geese that seemingly have disappeared from my area. I've been wondering if maybe their population had greatly diminished somehow. Well, they'll definitely be back if the geese in my pictures today have anything to say about it!

What you see above is a scene with two adult Canada Geese and their young. They're swimming along very far out on a pretty good sized lake. I had to zoom in as far as my camera would go to get this close. There is a very good reason I did this. Can you see what that reason is?

Count the geese.

What you see in the pictures are two adult geese and at least twenty of their little goslings(babies). That's right, I said twenty! I have no idea how this pair of geese ended up with twenty babies, but there they are. Everything I've ever read says that one mother goose will have seven eggs. If one is damaged or stolen, then she will lay another one, always to equal seven.

I'm not sure if that's exactly true, but seven is the number of eggs that the goose I watched last year had. Go see for yourself. Even if the idea of seven isn't 100% true, how can one mother goose sit on twenty eggs at one time? Look at them. Those babies are pretty much all the same size! They were born together. And I said before, at least twenty. There may be more.

Now of course, there could be another explanation. Maybe the adults aren't one female and one male, which I consider highly unlikely. Maybe they are two females together, combining both of their full compliment of little ones together. Still, that's a little too many goslings even for two geese. So, what's the answer?

Maybe they're the goose babysitters. Maybe they're child abductors. Maybe they adopted these other babies. Maybe they collect babies from all over the world, like some of those crazy entertainers do. No matter what they've done, this is one huge goose family.

And I definitely do believe one of those two adults is a male and one is a female. I've watched geese enough to know this by the order in which they swim. And yes, those are swans in the background. I have a future post or two to talk about swans, including some excellent pictures. I think a huge family of geese like this deserve their own story though, don't you?

Tell me what you think happened here? How did this family get so big? Any theory is welcome. A rational explanation would be good, and a completely loony one would be really fun. So, what do you think?

It Won't Be Long Now...

I've been looking back at some of my photos from last year. No, they haven't been destroyed in my hard drive crash. All of my nature stuff is very safe. Anyway, I decided to remind myself what things looked like a year ago. Last year at this time there was much more snow on the ground than there is now, but it wasn't long before it would be melting fast.

This winter has been much milder here than it was last year. We had two or three huge snowstorms then that made it impossible to go out on those days. This year none of our snowfall has been very bad at all. There's no was anyone can predict the future, but last year's hard winter ended abruptly. Can this year be the same?

This is what it looked like in the my favorite park over this past year. This picture is from only my second trip through there.This was from February 27. The snow never really came back. That date is only a little over a month from now. Could it look like this soon this year. The weather forecast for today is warm and rainy. Rain washes away a lot of snow.

I have really enjoyed the winter this year. But for all of you who haven't, maybe it will look like this very soon. And then spring is just around the corner. I don't know about you, but I'm going to miss the winter. I don't want it to go quite yet. Give me just a little more time.

How Good is the Water in Argentina?

A fellow expat, and soon to be local business owner, recently submited a water sample to an American water testing company called National Testing. She just received the report, and from what I can tell, the water in her sample was good. She took it from the tap in her home in Las Cañitas.

I would like to share the results of the test with you:

Iron and manganese are common metalic elements found in the earth´s crust, and therefore, also found in water. They can affect the color and flavor of food and water. They may react with tannins in coffee, tea, and wine. In this report the local water supply got a 0.046 mg/L in Iron, way under the US national standard of 0.3 mg/L. Manganese squeeked by with a 0.04 mg/L against the national standard of 0.05 mg/L.

Copper also comes in way below the national standard of 1.3 mg/L at just 0.10 mg/L.

Zinc also comes way below its national standard clocking in at .067 mg/L against 5 mg/L.

There were three elements that did not state a national standard limit and only had a minimum detection level stated. Those were Calcium (19 mg/L), Magnesium (3.8 mg/L), and Sodium (21 mg/L).

Calcium and Magnesium are involved in affecting the hardness of the water, and since the hardness came in at 63 mg/L, this qualifies it as moderatly hard water, but well below the national standard of 100 mg/L.

Turbidity in the local water was 0.6 mg/L below the standard of 1 mg/L. Turbidity is the lack of clarity of brilliance in a water.

Total Dissolved Solids is used as an indicator test to determine the general quality of the water. In this case it came in at 130 mg/L, way under the national limit of 500mg/L.

Chloride, which gives water a salty taste, also comes in way below the national standards; 21 mg/L versus the limit of 250mg/L for example.

Total THMs came in at 0.06 mg/L against the national standard of 0.08mg/L. This test is important becuase it measures four chemicals that are formed as by-products of chlorination. These chemicals are Cancer group B carcinogens (they cause cancer in lab animals). The full name of the test is Trihalomethanes.

I am no expert in this topic. I just started snooping around based on the report received. Based on this report, it looks like the drinking water is safe and well within the US National Standards. The water might be a little hard, but that was kind of obvious to me when I first came down here.

My First Fish

I've been doing numerous fish motifs of late, and so thought to go back to the beginning. Unfortunately, I couldn't find the crayola crayon plein air pickerel portrait circa 1975 so I had to whip up something entirely new for this entry. I sure miss the newsprint pickerel image, but I tore the house upside down and couldn't find it. In my minds eye it was far superior to anything I've done since. I was only about ten years old, and I can still see every detail, all the green gold scales in place, and it 's tortured fishy eye staring up at me. You see, I did the portrait on the boat, with a freshly caught, live, and hoping to live longer fish. The memory is oddly crisp.
It was my first and last fishing trip with my Dad. It was boring! I had begged, wheedled and whined to be allowed on board, and finally had my way. My parents boat was a large aluminum rowboat with an eggshell blue interior. The outboard motor was Johnson Seahorse, 12 horsepower. This left me with plenty of imaginative fodder as I would sit up front and visualize 12 foaming amphibious equines frothing and straining at their traces. In my mind I wrestled and guided their power, holding invisible reins (a rough rope). But the fishing trip was not like the evening sunset tours I'd been on before. Then I would sit up front and daydream myself Poseidon's daughter. The relentless drone of the outboard engine, loud as it was, only heightened the experience with its mesmerizing monotony that drowned out the ordinary sounds of summer. The shoreline would power by, ribbons of brown cabins, green trees and pink granite. I would perch up front staring down into the black deeps of Horseshoe Lake seeing endless darkness interspersed with white and yellow lilies and jade green weeds.
But the ride to the fishing hole afforded little time for daydreams. It was less than two minutes before the anchor (a concrete filled javex bottle) was tossed down into the water. It was a hot bright day and the air was still. Nothing moved excepting my young restless self to the great annoyance of the avid fishermen (my father and uncle). My attempt to alleviate the tedium with conversation was immediately shushed. When I squirmed in my seat I was told to be still. However, I was well armed with a block of newsprint paper and box of crayons. The first fish caught was my subject--alive and destined for dinner. I can't quite remember if I was thinking, as I drew, of how soon this life would be cut short. I do remember carefully attempting to capture every ribbon of colour and glitter of scale, knowing how brief the opportunity was. Supposedly children have no real understanding of the finality of death, but I don't recall having any illusions of a piscine heaven awaiting the gasping pickerel fish. I was all too aware that it was here today and gone forever tomorrow. Whatever I failed to capture in crayon would be reduced to scales and scraps and fillets by nightfall and gone from the world forever.
The irony of my lost artwork does not escape me either.

ICANA is hosting a series of breakfast networking meetings that are sponsored by Sugar & Spice among others like Nespresso, La Mejor Flor, Sessa Editores, Nuss Palermo Soho, Telecom, St. George´s College, etc.

I arrived at the previous one a bit late that had the US ambassador presenting. I have met her like 5 times already. I don´t think I even met the previous ambassadors at least once, but then again, I am expanding the circles that I am moving in. I mean, I met Christina Kirchner this year as well. It should be normal that I meet my own country´s ambassador right?

This time around it´s the South African ambassador Mr.Anthony James Leon´s turn. The topic is South Africa and the World Cup and basically it´s a networking meeting. The Cormorant's Return

I found one of my favorite birds not too long ago. I've seen these birds many times, but I've been waiting for them to come back. This bird is a double-crested cormorant. On most summer days there is at least one of these big birds somewhere on this lake. I've seen as many as three.

I didn't catch the cormorant at a rare time in the picture above. A cormorant will hold its wings open like that for long periods of time so it can dry them in the Sun. They have to do that because they don't have the same natural oils on their feathers that repel water that a lot of other water birds, like ducks, do.

From a distance these birds can sometimes look rather sinister or bat-like when they are perched like this with their wings spread open. Some people consider them to be pests, and they most likely are in some places. But there aren't very many of them in my lake, so they're just fine here.

The cormorant is perching on a piece of wood that's sticking up out of the water. This is a favorite place of theirs. A cormorant can almost always be found on something like this when it's not swimming. They are perching birds. I always try to get a look at this area when I first am able to see the lake. I'm always hoping the cormorants will be there.

This is what they do when they're not up on their perches. The cormorants will swim around the lake getting ready to find some fish to eat. From the land they look like little dinosaurs or lake monsters when you see them like this.

They will dive under the water for a long time trying to catch fish. One second you see them, and the next second they're gone. They eventually pop back up to the surface far away from where they started. They're actually kind of fun to search for when they do this.

Okay, that's my post for today. I had to do this one quickly because I was having quite a bit of trouble getting onto the internet since my last post. As soon as I was able to connect I began typing this post up. I hate when it has to happen this way. Now I have to go and see about Nature Center Magazine. I hope to see you there.

The cormorant is a large water bird with black plumage. It has a wingspan of about 100 centimeters form the Ussuri River region of Siberia and the northern-east region of China fly spend about five months in Kinmen; they do not embark on their return journey to the breeding grounds until April the following year.

The cormorant is equipped with webbed feet, a strong bill, easily wet-able feathers and a special flexible pouch on its throat, making the bird an efficient catcher of fish. Highly gregarious, the cormorants like to feed and roost in large numbers. They also fly in line formations. Every year the entertaining antics and sheer number of these birds attract many visitors, both domestic and abroad, to Kinmen.

Kadalundi bird sanctuary, 19 km from Kozhikode is home to more than a hundred varieties of native birds and over 60 species of migratory birds flock here in large numbers. The sanctuary is also known for a wide variety of Fish, Mussels and Crabs. Birds like Terns, Gulls, Herons, Sandpipers, Whimbrels, and other migratory birds flock the place from the month of November and return only by the end of April. The sanctuary, which is spread over a cluster of islands, covers an area of 3 kms in a scenic area surrounded by hillocks. A hillock, which is 200 m above sea level, provides a splendid view of the river mouth and the sea. The ideal season to visit is from December to April in the early hours of the day.The number of birds in the approximately 2 sq.km area is quite astonishing. The variety is also excellent with terns, gulls, egrets, herons, sandpipers, brahmini kites and cormorants among others. The best time to see this sanctuary in all its glory is from November to April. To see the turtles it is necessary to explore in the forest departments boat, as one has to move out into the open sea. Due to its location along the coast, the climate is excellent through most of the year. Visits should be avoided during the months of May to July as the area receives torrential rainfall during that time. A day trip from Kozhikode is enough to explore the sanctuary.
The sanctuary seemed to be a favourite location for the wealthier families of the area as we saw an endless row of extremely impressive bungalows bordering it Kadalundi town itself seemed like a small quiet place very typical of towns in this part of the country. It had a couple of small eating joints serving local cuisine. It is advisable to take along a small packed meal while visiting the sanctuary because if you are interested in birds or photography, youll hate to waste time walking all the way to the town and back. One would rather even spend the time just watching the fascinating territorial battles of the hundreds of crabs dotting the wall beside the jetty.

This time it´s Tea and Cookies and it´s at the Dot Shopping Mall. Yes, Argentina now has a Sugar & Spice store at a shopping mall.

I have only 3 simple rules.

A Rare Black Squirrel

What is it about black squirrels that I like so much? They seem so mysterious to me. I only get to see short glimpses of them. I always call them the ghosts of the forest because they never come very close and they are gone almost before I realize they were even there.

It is a huge challenge for me to get any pictures of them, even though I do have some now. Most of the time the pictures come out as one bad blur, so I'm the only one who ever sees them. But there are rare occasions, such as this one, where one rare picture comes out okay. That's when I get to share these little dark wonder creatures with the world.

Since I do only have the one picture this time, I'll direct you to a few other posts of mine with more pictures of black squirrels. There's a ton of information about black squirrels combined in these posts.

I can tell you for a fact that more people are interested in black squirrels than any other kind. I get several searches every day for black squirrels, not many for the others. My first black squirrel post actually has a page rank of 2 all by itself. These little guys are obviously a fascinating enigma to the people who have newly discovered their existence.

The squirrel in the picture above paused just long enough for me to get a few shots of him, which is longer than most do. Only this one picture came out good. I'm glad I got it. These dark little creatures are very hard for the camera to see in the varying light of the forest. Maybe one day a black squirrel will walk up and introduce himself to me, but until then I at least have a few rare pictures.

A Majestic Bird

The bird you see in these pictures is a red-tailed hawk. I spotted him from the road as I was driving by. He was off in this very distant tree, but he was so big that he looks closer. I'm not sure what made me look in that direction, but I'm glad I did.

I have to tell you that I saw this hawk back on the same day that I saw the turkey vultures. I've seen many things since then, even today, but I didn't want this sight of a hawk to be lost to time. These big birds are some of the most majestic animals in existence.

I was able to stop the truck and take pictures of this hawk from the window. So there was no actual hiking involved this time, even though I was on a standard hiking trip that day. For those of you who don't know, Almost all of my photos are taken while I'm out hiking. Hiking is the real reason I go out.

The animals, like this red-tailed hawk, are really just a bonus on my hiking trips. I talk about the animals because they give me more varied and different things to say. My hikes aren't the kind where I would walk for several days or for many many miles. I usually only go for maybe a maximum of six miles. Most of the time I probably average two. But I still accomplish what I want, like seeing this hawk.

I watched that hawk sitting in the tree for several minutes. I did my best to get the pictures, but the distance made it difficult to get them. A camera can have a hard time focusing at far distances on an animal that is surrounded by branches. It doesn't know if I'm after the hawk or the branches. I got lucky this time.

I think the hawk knew I was there watching because he finally leaped into the sky and flew almost straight away from me. But with my trusty camera I was able to get a few good pictures of that too. There is only the shape, but I still got it.

And there he goes, that majestic red-tailed hawk. I finally lost him when he flew past the distant tree line. I'll still never forget him though because he was another very special sighting. It's not every day that I see a hawk like this one. Seeing something like this is very thrilling.

Touch Me, I Dare You

Search engines must hate me with my teaser titles that have absolutely no relevance whatsoever to the subject matter.

Lets talk fungi. Jelly fungi, to get specific, and in fact, I cant get more specific than that this time, as Ive failed to identify what looks like tree brains oozing out of bark. I found them irresistibly intriguing, so much so that I just had to touch them. Dear husband was with me, and not only did he have to tolerate this weird fungal fetish of mine, but was actually dared to participate.

Now you have to understand, this is a man who hates mushrooms, enough to run from a room if he smells them cooking. But what sort of man can resist a dare? Come to think of it, hes touched all sorts of strange and forbidden things at my goading. Snakes and frogs, for instance. He also hates snakes, and declares frogs slimy, toads also, which displays a certain level of ignorance (he knows better now). But Ive caught snakes, specifically a lovely brown rat snake that was in danger of being roasted in the fire (it was warming itself by dangling off a branch that overhung the fire pit). And while I had no hard time at all grabbing it (they are harmless, unless you are a rat) I couldnt manage to pull the thing off the branch without stretching it to death. So, it was my husband who had to overcome his primal fear and carefully unwind the tail from the branch allowing me to deposit said snake in a safer (but less warm) place. He does now admit that snakes are not slimy.

So, on a lovely late autumn walk, here I go find grey jellies growing on trees, and they are clear, and gooey and jiggly to boot. (click on the photo to enlarge to get the full effect). And I just had to touch them; I couldnt resist. And, like ancient Eve, I insisted that my husband touch them too in spite of his misgivings. And they were, um, odd. Not slimy at all; dry on the surface, but very soft like skinned over pudding, all liquid inside. And there we were, the two us, bent over on the side of the trail, stroking a tree, when a whole troupe of cyclists came peddling by.

My husband, by my count, is a brave man.

They're Coming To Get Me!

I told you yesterday about the strange mob of squirrels I found at the riverfront park I visited; a place called Elizabeth Park. This was no isolated thing there. The park is just full of these squirrels. I actually encountered them in several places throughout the park. Today I bring you the squirrels that came after me.

I shouldn't have done it really. I stood there jokingly calling this one above. The consequences were really nothing anyway because he just stood there and ignored me. It was after I gave up that he came for me. And he wasn't alone either! I had no idea what I had gotten myself into.

My old friend Flynn the daring adventurer squirrel has nothing on these guys. He just poses for pictures and rides dogs. Oh, and he took some pictures of me once. I'm still waiting to see those pictures by the way. Maybe he'll be willing to share them with everyone. But these squirrels are like nothing I've ever seen, and they're real.

These squirrels are so fascinating, and the incident was so different that I made sure I captured some of this on high definition video. So I have this new episode of Rat TV for you! This video shows the squirrels literally coming after me, or more precisely, any food I might have.

Watch the way first one then two squirrels come running over to me. They are in stalking mode the whole way. When they begin to get close they veer off towards my right. Believe me, they are very close by then; right in front of me, and too close for me to keep the camera on them. Besides, that was when I decided it was time for me to leave.

This picture is from when the first squirrel began creeping closer. At this point I only thought this was funny. I really didn't think they'd ever be brave enough to come closer. How wrong I was! I have to say that I'm sure the squirrels meant no harm. They were only coming to ask for food. But their actions startled and disturbed me, an everyday adventurer who never saw this type of behavior in a squirrel before.

To be honest, I have seen behavior from a squirrel and some chipmunks that was close. The chipmunks would come right over, and I was a little worried by them as well. They all only wanted food, but they are still wild animals. I don't want to have to fight off, and maybe even inadvertently injure these little guys because they decide to crawl up my leg. I'd like to remain the good guy.

This pair in this last picture are two completely different squirrels than I showed above. The behavior is the same though. They are very aggressive in their search for handouts from humans. They really do try to put on good faces and be on their best behavior when they do this, but their movements are very aggressive.

This can all really be a little scary. I'm not just being oversensitive about this. I've had wild raccoons climb on me before, and they weren't nearly as disturbing. The raccoons were children, These squirrels are adults with adult faces and mannerisms. That might be what changes my attitude a little.

Even so, the bad reaction I had towards them was all my own. My guess is that most people who are used to this behavior find it very cute and harmless. Feeding them is not necessarily wise, but the squirrels are mostly better off for it. It's just the close proximity that concerns me. Mistakes can be made, but I hope they never are. I wish these friendly squirrels well. Watch the video! It's a fun one.

You know, I try to mind my own business while I'm out hiking, so I didn't deserve this at all! So what if I pester the animals sometimes with my picture taking. It doesn't hurt them one bit, and I think some of them like the attention. I mostly just quietly walk around looking at the trees. So I ask you, does this deserve a vicious attack?

No sooner had I gotten into the forest than an army of rotten little snow fairies came tinkerbelling up to me. I say rotten now, but I used to think they were delightful little creatures. I loved the way they looked like little fireflies until you got a closer look at them, to discover their little fairy faces and angelic wings. Now they're just rotten little monsters. Do you hear me snow fairies! Rotten little monsters!

It all started out innocently enough. I was happy when I saw them coming towards me from what seemed like every direction. I took as many pictures as I could while I watched them approach. I assumed that's what they wanted. I mean, why else would they approach a guy with a camera who wasn't bothering anything?

Before I knew it, they began landing on me, one after another. Even that was fine enough with me until they began their awful attack. And would you like to know in what form that attack took? It was horrible and disgusting. If you don't want to know, you may not want to read any further.

I thought there was nothing wrong until I felt something wet running down the back of my neck. It was then that I slowly reached up and gently touched my hair. It was completely soaked! On nooooo! They were using my head as a toilet! I'll get you, you rotten little snow fairies!!!

I began swatting at them to try and get them to go away! Even after their terrible attack, I still didn't want to hurt them, only to get them away. Of course this didn't work even a little bit. They still kept coming at me no matter what I did. So I ran!

I ran and ran, but this only seemed to increase the fury of their attack! I had to get to my truck! I ran out of the forest towards the parking lot of the park while the fairies still came at me. Stupidly, I stopped to take a couple more pictures, and they swarmed me again.

I quickly realized my mistake and ran for the truck. I dropped my keys twice before I finally unlocked the door. My hand slipped on the door handle when I tried to open it, because it had become slippery with their awful emanations. After all of that, I finally was able to get in.

Luckily none of the fairies followed me into the truck. But after I got the door closed and I looked out the windows, I saw that the fairies were still trying to get me. They were falling out of the sky and crashing into my windshield in their efforts to assault me. I didn't want to stick around any longer than I had to, so I started the truck and drove back home.

After all of that, I now know why so many people don't like going out in the snow. The snow fairies will get you if you don't watch out!

A Broken Lake

This is what I was greeted with when I went down to the fishing platform at Carpenter Lake the day after all the snow melted. A broken and battered sheet of surface ice. We have a new, even thicker, layer of snow now that I'm going to be showing you soon, but first I wanted to show you what a warm up and a thaw can cause.

I've shown you in days past how this lake so quickly froze solid. Now, just as quickly, it is breaking up. I really wonder what it must have been like when these cracks happened, and when the ice began to shift and shake. I know now that the experience is very similar to being in an earthquake. Go here for my description of what an ice quake can be like.

As you can see by the photo above, this ice must be at least three inches/eight centimeters thick. That had to be an awesome force that drove this ice sheet up and over the one next to it. Just think of the incredible cracking sound that must have accompanied it. Along with both sight and sound must have come a huge vibration that shook the surrounding area.

I know this all happens. I've seen, heard, and felt it myself. I do have a recording of the sound of the ice breaking, but it's not a very good one. I got it on a day when the ice was still forming and the lake was pulling at it. I think I'll wait to bring sounds like this to you until next spring when the real action happens.

I have one final look of this big crack in the ice for you. It's very similar to the first one, but it's a bit closer. I wanted to cover all bases for you; well, at least as much as I could. I guess sometimes there's no substitute for being there, but I'm going to work on bringing you the closest experience I can by the time we get the really good ice quakes next spring.

Notice on the right of the picture the ice is shinier, more liquid in appearance. That is evidence of the thaw it went through. It is now in the process of refreezing. The next time I came out here the ice was once again covered in a layer of snow. These cracks now cannot be seen.

Armin van Buuren's collab with Dutch singer VanVelzen on 'Broken Tonight' certainly managed to pull the trance crowd to its sound. But the diversity in the matching remix-package will definitely cause a stir far beyond the glowstick-dancers and trance addicts of this world. Contradiction is the key-word to the remixes included. Keeping in mind that variety is the soul of pleasure, two producers from two different scenes were called in to interpret this peak time trancer in their very own way. Time to brace yourselves, and get ready for some rumbling trance and house violence.

There's no real surprises to the fact that the remix delivered by Alex M.O.R.P.H. is another sure-shot of a tune for any trance DJ's set. The German producer delivers one quality track after another, and this one is no different. A tension building structure, including a strong break and tech-trance explosion afterwards, and Alex' typical sound on top make his remix a true anthem for all those trance seeking souls out there.

However, the other remixes in this package are far beyond the average tunes you'd expect to find in an Armin van Buuren release. A daring challenge was given to Dutch house sensation Hardwell. The young Dutchman, currently one of the most requested names in house-land, had his definite breakthrough with the ultimate feel good bootleg 'Show Me Love vs. Be'. After remixes for the likes of Laidback Luke, Fedde Le Grand, Steve Angello, Chris Lake, Sander van Doorn and loads of other elite names, Hardwell's now able to tick the box for Armin van Buuren as well.
First off, he delivers the 'Hardwell's Dutch Club Remix'. Hands down for the youngster being able to turn this trancer into a booty-shaking house tune, cheeky in every single way. But Hardwell wouldn't be the successful DJ that he is today, if he didn't came up with another surprise. A second 'Hardwell Remix' left his studio, with a tech-house inspired sound, deeper and more accessible for the Armin fans.
With this liquid fusion of trance and house, Hardwell's remixes of 'Broken Tonight' surely fills some gaps, showing the best of both worlds really isn't that far apart.

What Is This Mystery Creature?

I left you yesterday with a picture of a mystery creature. Today I'm going to reveal the identity of that creature, and the first part of the exciting event that it created. Read on to find out what it is. This will take a story so you can find out just like I did. Let's start from the beginning.

It had been a quiet idea at the nature park, so I wasn't expecting to see much at all. I heard a goose honking down by the dam, so I figured I'd go down there to see if one of them was doing anything at all interesting. When I got down there, I noticed that there were actually four Canada geese and two mallard ducks swimming around together by the opposite shore of the lake.

As I began taking pictures of them, I noticed what looked like a big oddly colored squirrel come trotting along the shore from the left side. I kept thinking it was a very odd looking squirrel, but what else could it be? The geese also noticed this creature, and they were watching it very closely!

The odd little creature began to creep toward the right, trying to seem very nonchalant to the geese, who weren't buying it at all. It hesitated while watching the geese, but then made a run for it past them and off to the right! I had no idea what it was trying to do, but I was now just as interested as the geese were. I wondered if maybe it was planning to attack them, or maybe the ducks.

The oddly colored creature, that I still thought must be a squirrel, slowed down again as it got past the first pair of geese. It seemed to be trying to hide behind the taller grass that happened to be there. The creature was nervously watching the geese, and it was clearly after something, but I just didn't know what yet.

After another second or two the creature noticed the second pair of geese that were also there, and it decided that it had better keep moving up the shoreline. It made a run for it with the geese still intently watching! This all was actually happening in only a matter of a few seconds, so I was not nearly as prepared as I would have liked to be for what happened next.

When this creature, which I still thought was maybe a squirrel, made it past the geese, it quickly moved towards the edge of the water and very smoothly slipped right in! No squirrel would ever do something like this! I now knew this was no squirrel at all. I had only two guesses. It could be an otter, or it could be an animal I researched a few months ago, a mink.

It definitely was too small to be an otter, so that only left one possible identity for this little creature. This creature is a mink! Now you know the identity of this little mink. For those of you that guessed it was a weasel, you are partially correct. A mink is actually a kind of weasel.

But what happened when the mink slid into the water? Did it swim away? What did the geese do? Come back tomorrow to see what happens next. This is going to get very exciting, and I even have video of this event! You won't want to miss this!!!

Baldhead River & Orphan Lake Trail

Mouth of the Baldhead River as it empties into Lake Superior, accessed by the Orphan Lake Trail (dayhiking) and the Coastal Hiking Trail.
This is a scene often photographed, and just as often not. It is a long stretch of cobble and pebble beach and very linear in quality. Artistic licence, and a rather liberal dollop, finally allows me to share the breath-taking panorama, a vista that combines the opposing forces of the smashing rhythms of Lake Superior slamming in from the west and the inexorable flow of Baldhead River serpentining out from the east.
The Orphan Lake Trail is what I call the Lake Superior Sampler, as it's 8+ kilometres offer glimpses of all the that the vast Provincial Park has to offer. If you complete the circle you will see a burn scar, a mature deciduous forest, a cliff-top view of a quiet inland lake, the rugged shore of an inland lake, the vast coastline of Lake Superior (shown), a river mouth, a water fall (which you can dip your toe into, and, more rarely, swim in an upper pool), a spagnum bog lined boardwalk, a dizzying view of a vertical cliff-face. Did I miss anything?
Next year, I'm thinking of dropping off a new letterbox to tempt you in...shhhh!

Image: 7"x14" grey Stonehenge paper, coloured pencil. Prisma colours, a limited pallet of egg yellow, turquoise blue, indigo, raspberry red, white, cream, and light pink. I love optical mixes! Thus ends the experiment. I just have no interest in doing this one as a water colour or mixed-media. The pencil has spoken!

The Tree

There is a tree that I have seen very many times in the forest. This tree has inspired several stories of mine. While I was on my flight out of the nature park after my great tumble, I still made sure I stopped to take a lok at this great tree. I think I stop and examine it every time I walk past.

The branches of the tree seem to be tendrils that are reaching out to gab any unsuspecting travelers of this place. Whenever I get close, I could swear I see a face in the trunk, but it's always shifting and changing. I don't really know what to think of this tree. Is it good, is it evil, or is it just a tree? I guess that question can only be answered by the next person that it grabs up and eats.

Can you see a face on this tree? What does it look like to you? I see strange things on this tree from every angle. I'm really not sure whether the tree is still alive or not, because whenever there are leaves on any of the trees, they surround this one as well.

This forest looks barren and devoid of life, but when spring gets here it will be a full dense place full of green leaves. I may not go back here until then because seeing it like this depresses me a great deal. Anyway, there are plenty of other places for me to have my everyday adventures... Ahh, maybe at least once more.

And finally, just to update everyone, I feel fine after my tumble down the hill, but I was in more pain than I realized at first. I'm not sure about my camera yet. It works, but I need to examine it further. I also need to give it a good cleaning, even though I've already done so once.

An Unexpected Interruption

The Everyday Adventurer will not be updated for awhile. Friday afternoon while I was sitting at a stop light in my truck I was hit from behind by another car. The truck was smashed up pretty good and I was rushed to the hospital. I'm getting better now, but it's going to take time for me to get back to normal. As a result I am taking some time off from everything so I can have time to heal. I hope it won't be long, but I'm not sure how long it will take. Nature Center Magazine will also stop for the time being for the same reason.

I'm hoping I will be able to get Nature Center Magazine back up and running in about a week, but I'm not sure yet. It's going to take longer to get The Everyday Adventurer back up because walking my nature trails is impossible for me right now. I'll be back as soon as I can though.

In the meantime I hope you will all visit the links of others that appear in my comments section here, the links in my sidebar, and the other blogs that I'm linked to through the advertisements on this site. I'll also be back to reading and commenting on your blogs as soon as I can.

In A Far Country

Don't say I didn't warn you that this blog may take a few sharp left turns.

This is a little like hanging my underwear out to dry.

Firstly, thank you to any blogger (and you know who you are) brave enough to present their rough sketches to the world. Here's a few of mine.
Secondly, it was a humdinger of a dream that I had, the kind you get (if you're lucky) every six months or so. Okay, if you're prone to nightmares, I guess that would be unlucky. I believe the technical term is vivid dream (actually listed as a side-effect for some pharmaceuticals--no, I'm not taking any, legal or otherwise). These are the sorts of dreams that scroll out like a movie on the big screen, but with full surround sound, 3-d perspectives, sensations and sound. Upon waking, the details are easily remembered. If I knew how to get more of these (sans pharma's!) I would certainly try--it's much more fun than lucid dreaming (wherein the dreamer controls the dream) as I don't know what happens next.

Images: 5"x7" sketch paper, graphite, and Tombow pen. This is the first time I really gave the Tombow a good workout. If you've never seen one, it's a dual-tipped marker, one side is a fine point, the other is a brush-shaped foam tip. I'm impressed--I did all those darks without it showing any sign of drying. And I did this sitting up in bed with the sketchpad held at an angle, propped up by a lap-cat. Sadly, the ink is not waterproof, so there's no chance of colouring up images later with watercolours. It was fun hand-writing the text (to read it, you'll have to click on the image to make it larger) spelling errors and all (see 'apocalypse'!)

The Adventure Continues

I still haven't found them. The geese are still missing from my little world. Oh sure, I still see a few every now and then. But for the most part, the huge flocks of hundreds must have decided that they like it somewhere else just a little bit better. I know I talked about this on Tuesday already, but I really do miss them.

Last year at this time I was busy making friends with the geese. I had seen them before, but I was beginning to finally get close to them. They, and the squirrels, became a sentimental favorite of mine. Last year was the year that I was finally getting close to the animals, and really getting to know them.

I noticed then that their numbers were decreasing around here, but there were still a lot of them. And some of the geese even began to think of me as a friend. I liked when these wild Canada geese would eagerly come to me. And now I miss them so much that I went looking for them at the place where they flocked in their greatest numbers. But look what I found. Less than a dozen.

This is Heritage Park. Earlier in the year there was fake wolves put out to scare the vast numbers of geese away from here. Maybe they also noticed that it worked too well. They have since taken down the fake wolves, and a few of the geese have returned. I guess these low numbers still qualify as a genuine gaggle of geese.

This is all bittersweet for me. A few short years ago the geese used to fight and play right outside my bedroom window early every morning. They always made as much noise as they possibly could make. Now that they're gone, I'm beginning to miss all of that comical commotion. But I hated it when they used to wake me up every weekend.

Maybe this is all for the best. The geese were a fun part of my everyday adventures in years past. Now, maybe it's time to move on to new adventures. Geese can always remain as fond memories for me, and they can even make occasional reappearances, but there are new and exciting things to see today and in the future. My adventures must continue, and I'm excited to see where they might take me next.

Why Do Squirrels Squint?

I think I have made a breakthrough! Almost a month ago I showed you how I observed a strange habit of a squirrel I was observing. The squirrel would squint his eyes right as he began to tense his body to start moving. That one was the now famous squirrel, Flynn. You can see those posts where I show you this here and here.

Now I have found another squirrel from a different location that does the exact same thing! This squirrel climbed to the side of a tree as it saw me approaching, which is a defensive move I've seen several times. Sometimes the squirrel will run up the tree if things are very dangerous, but they will run behind the tree if the threat is not so great.

This squirrel decided I wasn't much of a threat to him, so he turned to his right and ran behind the tree. All the while I was quickly taking pictures in rapid speed one by one. I usually don't get to see the closeup details until I get home, but can you guess what the photos revealed to me?

That's right! This squirrel squinted his eyes right before he made his move to run behind the tree! I never really thought I would get another picture of a squirrel doing this, but as you can see I got a very good one. This good sized fox squirrel squinted his eyes to show that there was no doubt about it.

Now we all can be reasonably sure that if it is an eyesight problem, more than one squirrel has it. It seems like too much of a coincidence though that I could catch two different squirrels in a month showing this same habit. It must be more widespread than just poor eyesight. I think the squint is something more like when we close our eyes when we sneeze. There is most likely a natural reason why squirrels do this.

This picture was taken in order right after the one above it. The squirrel went behind the tree, and thought it was hidden from my view. I got more pictures by stepping to the left just a little bit, but that wasn't as important as the way he was squinting, so I'll just keep those to myself for now.

That's it for today. I think I showed that it's reasonable to assume that squinting might just be a common thing for squirrels. It's probably not poor eyesight, but something completely different. Now I wonder if I will be able to catch another squirrel doing this very same thing. I'll be trying.

The Happy Threesome

Last night I went out to the new Antares in Las Cañitas.Yeah, it was part business visit part socializing which made it an incredibly fun way to work.

Weather or not Antares decides to give Sugar & Spice or El Tejano a try we at least had fun pitching ideas to them over some ice cold beer.

Our copetines (cheese based cookies) just go hand in hand with El Tejano´s home made, and now very spicy Nº4 salsa.

Our cookies have a lot of taste to them and if you pair them with something you better bring something that can stand up to them. In this case, the salsa was fantastic and we had the added benefit of washing it all down with very good artisan beer from Antares.

Amanda Robert Jones wrote about our last trip to Antares and you can read her write up here , and watch the birth of a new expat Blogger writing from Argentina. I highly recommend her blog.

My new favorite beers at Antares are the new Pilsner, Cream Stout, Honey Beer and the Kolsh.

I will eventually make it to the other beers they have. I want to go back and try something different each time.

And if they add either the copetines or El Tejano´s salsa they might as well reserve a permanent spot for me and start calling me Norm.

Computer Problems?

"Have I come to the wrong place?" That must be what you're asking yourself while looking at this picture at the top. Obviously it's not a picture of a squirrel or a robin or some other little creature of nature. In fact, it's not a nature picture at all! What's going on here!

Well, this is the maintenance crew of this nature preserve, and they're at the front entranceway. It seems there has been a problem with the park, and they've been working on it for a few days now. The main computer that powers the park is buried just to the left of those trucks, and they have to dig it up and fix a glitch in it.

I've been noticing some strangeness in this place for some time now, and it seems the computer is the cause of it all. The first problem was when the leaves all fell off the trees. Then the temperature began to drop throughout the park. It didn't seem to be too bad of a problem at first, but then the days became drastically shorter, and the lake froze over. They were hoping it would sort itself out but then a few days ago all hell broke loose!

For some odd reason it became difficult to get good photos of the animals, mostly the birds in flight. The deer disappeared completely, and all that was left of them were their tracks. Then the cloaking device on the black squirrels went down, and they were revealed for all the world to see.

If that's not enough, while I was in the forest yesterday morning, all of the animals seemed to have disappeared completely. I heard a few birds in the trees, but they seemed to be completely invisible. I'm really glad they were out there trying to fix things, but it just wasn't happening yet.

But after I was at the very back of the park, and making my way back out, I began to notice something. There was one lone squirrel running through the forest. It seems that they were making progress on the computer glitch. The weather has also been warming up a little bit, so they obviously have been getting that taken care of too. But all isn't fixed yet!

As I got to the front part of the forest I noticed something very strange going on. It seems that in their effort to restore the squirrel program they made a huge mistake. While they did get some of the squirrels back, it was almost all black squirrels! And not just a few!

It seems that they must have had to rebuild the squirrel program, and in the middle of their work they must have hit 300 instead of 30, because there were way too many black squirrels. And I have to tell you, when that many squirrels are created in one spot, they tend to go very crazy. When I saw all of those squirrels causing such a ruckus I had no idea what to do! I just stupidly stood there with my mouth hanging open!

That's my story. It may be strange, but it all happened... well, all of it except maybe the part with the computer. How would I know what they're working on up there? In fact, I don't really even care, so I just decided to make something up. My theory is better than reality anyway.

Learning To Fly

You see the geese in these pictures? They may not look familiar, but I have very many pictures of them already. They just didn't look quite the same the last time I featured them here. These were those rowdy teenage geese that I showed you awhile ago.

Back then these geese were only just beginning to develop their adult colors. Now they look like any other adult goose, except they aren't quite as big as their parents. There are still the two families that have formed their own gaggle(flock) here on the lake.

I think they are only waiting for the younger of the two families to be ready to fly, then they'll likely move on. The younger ones are the very same that I featured here several times as only eggs. Now they are almost grown. I have pictures of both large families again, but I'll only show them in moderation. I know not many of you want another whole week of nothing but these geese.

You can see them here testing their wings. These older children are almost ready to go. Pretty soon they'll be flying high in the sky, without a care in the world. They've already probably been flying back and forth along the lake.

Their parents are still watching them all very closely, and it appears they're all healthy. All of the babies from the two families also still seem to be present. I thought at least a few of them would be lost but these geese have survived and they're almost grown now.

They seem almost like my own pets now because I've been watching them before they were even born. It's going to be kind of sad when I don't see the two pair of goose parents leading these younger ones around the lake. I still have today though. And my favorite geese are still all here with me.

The View

I want to talk about something that I'm not sure I ever have before. Oh sure, I've skirted around the edges of it. But what I have here is something that maybe gets to the heart of why The Everyday Adventurer exists in the first place. How could I have missed it before?

I'm sure it's pretty obvious by now that I collect most of my stories and pictures from my short hiking trips that I go on as often as I can. Well, why would I want to go walking in the woods or any other place like that almost every day? It's because of what you see in the two pictures I have for you today!

Places like this are what I have never presented to you before. I have talked about how I find peace and comfort from being alone in nature, but I've never really shown you an example of what I see that makes that happen. You know, somewhere off the hiking trail, and without even the animals.

In these two pictures are two different views of the same log. You've seen it before if you've been reading my stories for awhile. If you look beyond the log you might barely see the big body of water in the background. That water is Carpenter Lake. You might also be able to see that the water is much lower than the land in front of the log.

This old log is laying right on the edge of a huge drop off. It's possible to climb down there, but it's steep enough that nobody ever does it. Even though it's too difficult to get a good look at the lake from here, I still find myself drawn to this place. It's because of the log, the drop off, and the hint of the lake. This is the heart of nature.

This is one of the places I look at while I'm in the forest. This is why I go. Not for the animals. Not for the hiking. Not even so I can tell anybody about it. These other things are only an added benefit. I go so I can see places like this. I wish I had time to explain this further, but now I'm just going to look at the pictures.

Did You Find It?

It seems that my games are just too easy for you. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but I think I'll have to make the next one just a little bit more of a challenge. Easy is fun, but sometimes a good challenge makes the solution to a game even more satisfying when you find it. Yup, the next one will be a bit harder.

As you might have guessed, the picture above is the bird we were all looking for. It is indeed a heron. It could indeed be an egret, but an egret is just another kind of heron. The strange thing about all of this is that this bird was able to hide from me much beter than it hid from you.

When I actually took these pictures I was so busy concentrating on the cormorant that I never saw this other bird there. I wish I did because I would have considered it an even greater prize right then. The cormorants were out there almost every day, but these birds were much rarer for me. The funny thing was that I did see it earlier but I thought it was gone.

Here's the same picture I showed you yesterday. I circled the heron for you so you could identify it even easier. And now you know for sure that it's right where you thought it was. You won! Go ahead and pat yourself on the back. You deserve it. Go on, I'll wait... There you go. Isn't victory satisfying?

I mentioned yesterday that I found the heron in this picture by accident. You see, I have a program that rotates my computer's desktop background between all of the pictures I've taken. This one just happened to come up. I happened to look at it and I saw that other bird lurking back there behind the hanging branches.

The surprise of seeing that bird hiding back there was what convinced me to make a game out of it. I guess I should have known that if it was that easy for me to see the bird then you would get it without a problem. I guess its back to the drawing board. My evil plan of world domination will have to wait until the next game.

Do you see that almost white colored blob floating there in the middle of this picture? That is the same hiding bird, only this time it was flying right past me. It was maybe fifteen minutes earlier, and I was standing right across the lake from where it was hiding in the other picture. If only I would have waited.

This story is told so I guess that's it for today. I'll be back tomorrow with something more current. In the meantime I'll be coming up with a new plan to TAKE OVER THE WORLD!!! Haa ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!!!

Winterberry

Yum yum! Nice ripe tomatoes. ...Uh, wait. Just kidding! These plants look kind of like tomatoes here, but that is very far from the truth. They are much smaller than a tomato and I don't think they're very edible. They are actually berries. As you may have guessed by the title of the story, this plant is called Winterberry.

I have wanted to write a story on this plant for over a year, but until now I haven't known what it was called. If you think I'm still mistaken just let me know what it is. Once I began taking pictures of my adventures I quickly noticed a few types of plants, like these, that stood out among all the rest. I always stop and look at them.

These plants are scattered around many of the nature preserves I like to travel. These particular pictures have been waiting for about a month in my ready area so I could write about them. I just wanted to give you at least a little bit of information about them before I presented them for all to see.

These winterberry shrubs are also known as Michigan Holly. That's for a very good reason. They're a member of the holly family. They're not an evergreen like other holly plants though. As soon as it begins to get cold the green leaves will turn yellow or black and eventually fall off the shrub. The berries remain though, which is why they are called winterberry.

In the places I go these plants are most likely strategically placed to attract birds. And they do that very well. That is one of the first things I noticed when I saw these plants. The birds seem to love eating these berries very much. That makes two benefits to looking at these beautiful plants.

Identifying this plant has been a particular triumph for me. Like I said before, I have been wondering about them for over a year now. It seems the deeper I travel into the world of nature the more I learn. I knew virtually nothing about what I saw when I began, but now I can identify so many different things.

The great thing about this ongoing discovery of nature is that I am still just beginning. There is so much more for me to learn, but I now could teach people so much that they never dreamed of. Who knows? One day I could take people on tours through these places, and teach them about many of the wonderful things along the way.

But I guess that's a dream for another day. Today I'm just happy that I have learned about my old friend, the plant called winterberry.
